naples prosthetic eye specialist Raymond Peters has a new pair of eyes to help make people whole again. Aristotle said “The face is the mirror to the soul”, and Raymond is one of those rare people with the skill and determination to make things right in his patients world.
Raymond has served the Naples area well with his prosthetics practice in Strand Boulevard, for many years. Gaining critical acclaim for his work in the field of ocular prosthetics. His field is a specialized one, and is a field that he dominates with his pioneering work. From crash victims to veterans from Iraq or Afghanistan, Raymond literally changes lives.
His world of ocular prosthetics, or artificial eyes to you and me, got a boost recently when he was joined by renowned British prosthetist David Trainer. David’s specialty is facial prosthetics, or maxillofacial prosthesis.
Trained in England, Trainer has held teaching and practicing positions throughout the world and is well respected in the industry. He is currently a professor at the University of San Paulo in Brazil, member of the American Anaplastology Association, and serves on the Editorial Peer Review Board of the Journal of Anaplastology.
David recently made the local news in August after the Naples News did a piece on his amazing work on crash victim Amalia Mendoza, “The Resurrection of Amalia Mendoza”. The unfortunate woman from Venezuela lost three quarters of her face in a car wreck on her way back from buying supplies for her restaurant.
David was contacted by Amalia’s daughter who found the Center for Ocular and Facial Prosthetics website and contacted them in her desperation to help her mother. He agreed immediately to see her, if they could make their way to Florida, he promised he would take care of the rest.
What happened next is nothing short of a miracle. David and his team devised a plan to reconstruct Amalias face and restore self confidence and dignity to her life. The procedures were long and painful, and involved inserting metal studs with magnets into her skull in order to support the prosthetic face.
A painstaking process then began of creating the prostheses from scratch including face, eyes and nose, then molding them to Amalias facial profile and then colors the whole thing to blend in seamlessly with the surviving skin.
This kind of work can only be done by a select few in the world, and David is at the top of that list. He is widely recognized as one of the best in the world at what he does, although he would rarely admit it. His addition to the Center for Ocular and Facial Prosthetics is a valuable one and one that Raymond Peters is immensely proud of.
Life just got a whole lot better for people with facial damage in Florida. Raymond and David do an amount of pro-bono work and can be contacted via their website or susanapeters@anaplastics.com.
