Child Accidently Shot in the Chest

LEHIGH ACRES, FL — A 7-year-old Lehigh Acres boy was accidentally shot in the chest. Deputies say an adult was cleaning a gun when it suddenly went off. The bullet hit the boy in the torso.

The child was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital around 8:30 Monday night. Deputies say he was breathing, conscious and is expected to recover. In fact, he may be released from the hospital on Tuesday.

“I have to wonder why anyone would clean a gun with a little one around,” said neighbor Richard Ten Brink. Ten Brink doesn’t know the family who lives at 1614 Fitch Avenue.

Deputies have not released the child’s name or said whether anyone will face charges in connection to the shooting. At this point, it’s being ruled a complete accident.
