BETHEL, Ohio (AP) — For a second time, an Ohio woman has given birth to a baby who couldn’t wait and arrived on the drive to the hospital. Christina Schuler’s 8-pound, 11-ounce son was born Tuesday in the front seat of the family’s pickup truck. Her husband pulled over less than a mile from their hospital in southwest Ohio’s Clermont County. The woman from Bethel says her labor was even shorter than it was in December 2006, when she gave birth to her son, Ethan, in a car. The Schulers also have one other child. The father, Nathan Schuler, says if the couple has any more children, they’ll have to leave for the hospital a lot earlier. They haven’t decided on a name yet for the new baby. ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) — A homeless man who called 911 from the hot tub of a suburban Portland home and asked for towels, hot chocolate and a hug got arrested for trespassing instead. Beaverton police say Mark Eskelsen called 911 from his cell phone, identified himself as “the sheriff of Washington County,” and asked for medical help. He later admitted he wasn’t the sheriff but informed the dispatcher he’d been “yelling for about an hour and a half.” The man said in his Sunday morning call that he’d been in the water about 10 hours and his towels had gotten wet. As he put it, “I just need a hug and a warm cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows in it.” The Oregonian newspaper says arriving officers arrested Eskelsen for investigation of second-degree criminal trespass and improper use of 911. — Information from: The Oregonian, http://www.oregonlive.com ? 2010 The Associated Press . RED BLUFF, Calif. (AP) — California wildlife officials say two men are in custody after a group of marijuana growers started to toss bags full of pot into a pickup truck belonging to game wardens they mistook for their suppliers. State Department of Fish and Game spokesman Pat Foy says two wardens in Tehama County were looking for deer poachers Monday night in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest when they heard footsteps behind them. They turned and saw five men hauling large military-style duffel bags and sleeping bags. Foy said the men approached the wardens’ truck as if to toss the bags in the bed. The wardens began shouting commands at the group and managed to handcuff two, one of whom was carrying a shotgun. Three others escaped into the forest. The wardens recovered 127 pounds of processed marijuana. ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Police said a 37-year-old man driving a dump truck led them on an hour-long chase over roads, rails and yards in the Syracuse area that ended with the suspect being shot. The Onondaga County Sheriff said Stanley Lostumbo jumped into a dump truck Tuesday night after being accused of stealing from vending machines at a mall. Police pursued the truck on a highway, through backyards and school grounds and down railroad tracks at speeds up to 65 mph before stopping it at a barricade in East Syracuse. Police said Lostumbo reversed the truck and hit a sheriff’s vehicle and officers fired, apparently striking Lostumbo in the shoulder. He was briefly hospitalized for minor injuries. Deputies were questioning Lostumbo. It was not clear if he had a lawyer. — Information from: The Post-Standard, http://www.syracuse.com ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Police investigating a home burglary in Russellville found a surprising clue – a cell phone that got left behind. Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said the phone was left near where a computer was taken in the weekend burglary. Investigators began calling some of the phone numbers and determined the phone belonged to a 19-year-old who was on probation for a previous burglary. The prosecutor said police also got surveillance video from the Wal-Mart in Russellville that shows the suspect cashing in coins believed to have been taken during the burglary. Rushing said, “It helps when you’ve got stupid criminals.” The cell phone’s owner, Tyler Blake Garrison, was questioned and charged with burglary. He remained in jail Wednesday. Garrison’s attorney, Jeff Barksdale, declined comment. — Information from: TimesDaily, http://www.timesdaily.com/ ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. DARIEN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police say a man fell out of his car onto Interstate 95 and watched his vehicle drive on for about two-tenths of a mile before it crashed into a pole. Troopers said they’re not sure why 51-year-old Robert Craig of Killingworth fell out of his 2006 Dodge Charger late Tuesday morning in Darien near Exit 10. Police said Craig was treated for minor injuries at Stamford Hospital. State police said Craig fell onto the highway but wasn’t struck by any vehicles. They say other motorists stopped to help him and get him to safety. Troopers said the car continued down the highway before striking a light pole and metal guardrail on the right shoulder. The accident remains under investigation. ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A fire that did $20,000 in damages to a northeast Arkansas home wasn’t caused by an electrical problem or burning food or arson, an insurance investigator concluded. Instead, the dead plants did it, according to a report summary provided to the homeowner, Brian Duncan. “The fire was caused by self-heating through decomposition of organic materials contained within a plastic flowerpot,” the Aug. 25 letter from State Farm Insurance Co. said. Or, in layman’s terms, spontaneous combustion. Duncan, whose home is a few miles south of Paragould, said the flowerpot had contained dead, decomposing flowers and potting soil that his wife had planted in the summer of 2009. Paragould is about 150 miles northeast of Little Rock. “She had intended on repotting (the flowers),” Duncan said. But they sat on the porch, unwatered, and eventually died. He said it was clear where the July 25 fire had begun, because the burning flowerpot and plants charred a hole in the porch and they fell to the ground several feet below. Still, Duncan said he was surprised at the conclusion contained in the letter. Duncan provided The Associated Press with a copy. Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze and Duncan’s father-in-law was able to put it out with a garden hose even before firefighters from a nearby volunteer fire department arrived. But it still caused some damage. Duncan, 51, CEO of Craighead Electric Cooperative, said the blaze charred decking around the hole where the flowerpot had been, and caught the home’s vinyl siding on fire. He said the heat broke a sidelight window next to the front door, and his air-conditioning system sucked in smoke from the fire. “The house was full of smoke,” he said. The smoke damage inside the 15-year-old home, Duncan said, meant his family had to repaint the entire interior of the 2,200-square-foot home and replace the carpeting, in addition to replacing the vinyl siding on the front of the house and the wooden decking of the porch. Duncan said that, since the fire, he had begun spreading the word about the potential fire hazards of dead plants. A fire marshal in nearby Jonesboro, Jason Wills, said such an occurrence was rare. “Spontaneous combustion is something where you have to have a lot of variables come together and it has to be just right,” Wills told Jonesboro television station KAIT. “It’s something that does happen, but this is the first one in our area that I’m aware of.” ? 2010 The Associated Press . MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — A man who bought a cell phone online, only to find it was the same one that was stolen from his car, tipped off California sheriff’s deputies, who arrested a man they believe broke into dozens of vehices. Deputies arrested 28-year-old Neil Hefner and recovered 163 cell phones, along with computers, wallets, gift cards and rare coins. He was booked for investigation of burglary. Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. John Benedict says one victim was looking for a new phone on Craigslist, found one that looked like his old one and bought it. When it arrived, many of his phone numbers were still programmed into it so he called deputies. Benedict says the seller’s return address was on the package. ? 2010 The Associated Press . The Chelan County sheriff’s office said the 52-year-old Snohomish man had moved his .40-caliber handgun from its holster to his back pocket Saturday to see if that position would be more comfortable. The Wenatchee World reported the gun fired the bullet down his left buttock and left leg, coming to rest just above the knee. GETTYSBURG, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota sheriff said two Minnesota men are lucky to be alive after they drove underneath a stalled semi truck towing a flatbed. Potter County Sheriff Alan McClain said he’s amazed the men were not decapitated. McClain said the crash happened about five miles west of Gettysburg on U.S. Highway 212, about 6:15 a.m. Saturday when it was still dark. He said the semi missed its turn and attempted a U-turn, and the tractor wheels went off the road and the semi got hung up. Potter said a pickup truck carrying 29-year-old Shane Hanson, of Clearwater, Minn., and 36-year-old Chad Fobbe, of Monticello, Minn., came down the highway and went under the trailer. The men were able to exit the vehicle. McClain said both men were treated at a Pierre hospital and released the same day. — Information from: Aberdeen American News, http://www.aberdeennews.com ? 2010 The Associated Press .
