MEXICO, Mo. (AP) — A goat that has been wandering around the eastern Missouri town of Mexico has gained enough attention to have his own Facebook page. But animal control officers are not amused. KXEO reported that the goat was first seen by a motorist on Saturday near an underpass on the east side of town. Mexico animal control officer Joe Horton said the department has received more than a dozen reports of the adult goat being seen around town, including in downtown Mexico. Horton said animal control officers are earnestly trying to catch the goat, which he’s named Billy Goat Gruff. Mexico residents are having a bit more fun with it. Someone started a Facebook fan page for the goat, which had 232 friends as of Friday morning. — Information from: KXEO-AM, http://info.kxeo.com ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. LEE COUNTY, Fla.?- Robert Tracey’s plea concludes years of investigation into his home, described by animal control officers as the worst case of animal hoarding they’ve ever seen. “As you made your way closer to the residence, you’d have to have assistance with breathing with filters, in order to breath,” said Animal control officer Adam Leath. Officers removed dozens of dogs from his Fort Myers home, so sickly some had to be put to sleep. OFFICERS REMOVED DOZENS OF DOGS FROM HIS FORT MYERS HOUSE – SOME SO SICKLY THEY HAD TO BE PUT TO SLEEP. “It’s the most horrific looking house I’ve ever been in. Feces over every square inch of the home, up the walls,” said Ria Brown. Tracey talked only talked to WINK days before his guilty plea and told us he was just trying to help the animals. “?I figured it was more important to take care of the dogs than to do a lot of housekeeping,” said Tracey. Now he won’t be able to come in contact with any pets for four years as part of his probation. In our interview last week, he said he’s ready to adopt as soon as he can. “Sure there’s nothing wrong with owning dogs again,’ he said. Tracey also agreed to mental health supervision. Prosecutors hope the treatment will help teach him how to be a responsible pet owner in the future. LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Animal control officers saw feces caked on the floors and walls at Robert Tracey’s home when they walked in two years ago. According to court documents, one of the officers said, “What I saw in there will haunt me for the rest of my life.” “It’s nothing that a bath couldn’t cure,” said Robert Tracey. He says he’d been taking care of dogs for 20 years. He wanted to take them in, but things got out of hand. “I figured it was more important to take care of the dogs than to do a lot of house keeping,” said Tracey. Two weeks before he’s set to go on trial for animal abuse, Tracey is talking to WINK, saying he doesn’t deserve to go to jail. He says his animals were taken care of. But court records released today show most of the animals had tick problems, skin issues, and some were so sickly they had to be put to sleep. The county spent more than $17,000 to keep the other dogs alive. Looking at all this for the first time, Tracey admits it spiraled out of control. “It was dirty because the dogs made it dirty. When you take care of the dogs you don’t have the time to do all of it. It was basically two of us,” said Tracey. Charles Sharp lived in the house with Tracey and just spent 6 months in jail for allowing all of this to happen. He sat in the room with us today but wouldn’t go on camera. He did say they just wanted to help the animals. “I miss them. Badly. The dogs were my best friends,” said Tracey. COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Animal control officers rescued 28 cats from a motel room in Columbia after receiving a complaint about the smell. Animal control supervisor Molly Aust said the cats were found Wednesday in a room at a Motel 6. She says the floor of the room was covered with a tarp, which was covered with cat waste and cat litter. A 52-year-old woman who lived in the room was issued a summons for violating a city ordinance that limits Columbia residents to owning only four dogs or cats older than 6 months. The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the cats were mostly oriental shorthairs, about 7 months to 1 year or more in age. The cats were taken to the Central Missouri Humane Society, which said most of them were in good condition. — Information from: Columbia Daily Tribune, http://www.columbiatribune.com ? 2010 The Associated Press . BEDFORD, Va. (AP) — Authorities said a regional drunken-driving checkpoint led to the discovery of a goat, bound and shoved in the trunk of a car. The Bedford Sheriff’s Office said the car, driven by 32-year-old woman, pulled up to the checkpoint on Friday night when deputies heard noises from the trunk. When asked what was in the trunk, the driver said she bought a goat from a farmer to give to the four passengers in her car, who are from Kenya but reside in Lynchburg. The goat was panting heavily and animal control officers said the temperature in the trunk was 94 degrees. The woman told deputies she is from the United Kingdom and transporting goats in this manner was acceptable there. She was charged with cruelty to an animal and released. — Information from: The News & Advance, http://www.newsadvance.com/ ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — City animal control officers have started removing hundreds of large, feral rats from inside a Las Cruces rental home. Animal shelter director Beth Vesco-Mock said the rats – some sickly and displaying evidence of fighting – are about the size of a four- to five-month-old kitten. Animal control officers had taken two skinny dogs and about 170 rats to the shelter by mid-Thursday, and officers estimated there were at least that many rats still hiding in the home. Officers also found the fur and skeletal remains of two dogs that were presumed to have been eaten by the rats. Authorities have charged a 55-year-old woman with three misdemeanors for excessive waste, improper care and maintenance of animals and dead animal removal. Each of the charges carry a maximum fine of $500 or 90 days in jail. — Information from: Las Cruces Sun-News, http://www.lcsun-news.com

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Why did the emu cross the street? To get away from the South Carolina police officers, animal control officers and people chasing it in Rock Hill. The Herald of Rock Hill reported the 6-foot bird ran 10 blocks through the city Tuesday, chased by as many as 50 people. Seventy-year-old Bobby Mangrum managed to capture the bird with a fishing net and managed to tie the animal’s sharp feet. Mangrum owns two emus along with llamas and goats and took the big bird home with him while police try to figure out where the bird came from. Police Lt. Joe Johnson said he wasn’t sure how he would phrase his report, saying the animal didn’t appear to break any laws, except perhaps running from police. — Information from: The Herald, http://www.heraldonline.com

ODESSA, Texas (AP) — All over town ran a lone goat as Odessa police and animal control officers tried to catch the roaming animal. The report to police came in Saturday as a sheep on the loose. Officers then determined it was a goat loping through a Taco Bell parking lot, a park and the dorm area at the University of Texas-Permian Basin. It took four police officers, two animal control officers and one off-duty police officer on motorcycle to corral the goat after about 30 minutes. Animal control officers subdued the goat with a tranquilizer gun and took custody of it. There was no immediate word on who owned the goat.
