CAUGHT ON TAPE: Cape Coral Car thief caught in the act By Nick Spinetto, WINK News Story Created: Mar 4, 2010 at 5:49 PM EST Story Updated: Mar 4, 2010 at 5:49 PM EST Cape Coral, Fla – A Cape Coral car burglar has people on edge. Police say the thief is responsible for a rash of car break-ins in the Northwest 7th Terrace section of Cape Coral. They fear his crime spree could turn violent because he’s been spotted carrying a gun. “There’s the threat of danger for anyone who comes across him,” said Trish Routte, from CrimeStoppers. Routte says they needs your help to catch this thief. The suspect is armed and considered dangerous. “A simple car burglar does not walk around with a gun tucked into their pants. We’re very concerned about public safety,” Routte said. The suspect was caught on Brian Kirkpatrick’s home surveillance camera. “It’d be great if someone recognized his face and turned him in,” he said. The suspect sneaked on Kirkpatrick’s property in the middle of the night. In the video, you can see him creep onto the driveway, going from car to car trying to open doors. He finds one unlocked and goes inside the car. “I was really shocked to see that,” he said. The car broken into belongs to Kirkpatrick’s daughter. The thief rummaged through the car for 12 minutes. He finally came out the back door. He stole a GPS and some sunglasses. As he gets out of the car, the gun is clearly visible the back of his pants. A scary concept if Kirkpatrick had confronted the burglar. “I didn’t want to startle him and have him start shooting,” Kirkpatrick said. This is the same concern authorities have. “If someone startled him. He could have easily pulled that gun and a simple car burglar got have turned into something much deeper,” Routte said. The suspect is still on the loose. Police believe he is tied to several other burglaries in the area and they want him caught. “We need to get him off the streets and make sure this spree stops,” Routte said. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS. You can get up to a $1,000 cash reward. Next article Three women claim they were drugged at local club

Elusive Fla. monkey dodges captors, defies darts

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A monkey that has eluded capture in the Tampa Bay area for more than a year has again escaped from Florida wildlife officials. Authorities were called to a neighborhood in St. Petersburg on Wednesday when the rhesus macaque monkey was spotted. It was twice hit with tranquilizer darts, but still got away by ducking behind a drug store and a church. Wildlife rehabilitator Vernon Yates says the tranquilizers don’t appear to affect the animal, though officials have increased the dosage each time they’ve used the drug on the monkey. Yates says the monkey is smart, even stopping to check traffic before crossing a busy street. Officials didn’t say how the monkey got loose. They say it isn’t considered a threat to humans. — Information from: The Tampa Tribune, http://www.tampatrib.com
