Wildlife officials find baby elk left on doorstep

Wildlife officials find baby elk left on doorstep

LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) — Congratulations, wildlife officials! It’s a baby elk. Officials at a U.S. Forest Service office in La Grande, Ore., last week found a baby elk left on their doorstep along Highway 30. It was dropped off Wednesday night and is estimated to be less than two weeks old. Officials are seeking the person who brought in the baby elk to find out where they originally found it, so that it can be returned to its mother. They say the baby elk probably was not abandoned, because mother elk regularly leave their babies hiding in tall grass or brush while they divert a threat, such as a coyote, and then return to their young. Officials believe the person who found the baby likely thought the animal was lost and needed to be saved. — Information from: The (La Grande) Observer, http://www.lagrandeobserver.com/

Lindsay Lohan takes swipe at E-Trade babies

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — Lindsay Lohan is feuding with the E-Trade babies. The actress has filed a $100 million lawsuit claiming a television ad for the Wall Street firm that aired during the Super Bowl and Olympics was modeled after her. Talking babies in the ad engage in chatter that refers to “milkaholic Lindsay.” The 23-year-old actress has famously sought substance abuse treatment. Lohan’s name was never mentioned. But her New York lawyer contends that “Lindsay” is an equally recognizable moniker for her client – like that of Oprah or Madonna. Lohan’s legal team is seeking an injunction to stop future airings. An E-Trade spokeswoman is declining to comment.

Healthy baby campaign uses texts to reach mothers

Healthy baby campaign uses texts to reach mothers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Expectant mothers are getting a new tool to help keep themselves and their babies healthy: pregnancy tips sent directly to their cell phones. The so-called text4baby campaign is the first free, health education program in the U.S. to harness the reach of mobile phones, according to its sponsors, which include Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, WellPoint and CareFirst BlueCross and Blue Shield. Wireless carriers including AT&T, Verizon and Sprint have agreed to waive all fees for receiving the texts. Organizers say texting is an effective means of delivering wellness tips because 90 percent of people in the U.S. have cell phones. “Especially if you start talking about low-income people, cell phones are the indispensable tool for reaching them and engaging them about their health,” said Paul Meyer, president of Voxiva, a company which operates health texting programs in Africa, Latin America and India. Studies in those countries have shown that periodic texts can reduce smoking and other unhealthy behaviors in pregnant mothers. Meyer said the U.S. program, run by Voxiva, will be the largest health-related texting program ever undertaken. Under the new service, mothers-to-be who text “BABY” to 511411 will receive weekly text messages, timed to their due date or their baby’s birth date. The messages, which have been vetted by government and nonprofit health experts, deal with nutrition, immunization and birth defect prevention, among other topics. The messages will continue through the baby’s first birthday. Text4baby is expected to be announced Thursday morning by officials from the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy. Government officials will be publicizing the campaign in speeches and promotional materials. Organizers hope the effort can curb premature births, which can be caused by poor nutrition, excessive stress, smoking and drinking alcohol. About 500,000 babies are born prematurely in the U.S. each year, and 28,000 infants die before their first birthday, according to the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition. The nonprofit is among the sponsors of the campaign. “The real scary thing is that we’re an industrialized nation and we’re not doing very well on infant mortality, and we know prematurity is a big part of that,” said the group’s director, Judy Meehan. Currently the U.S. ranks 30th worldwide for infant mortality, according to Meehan, behind most Western European nations. Researchers at the George Washington University have agreed to evaluate the effectiveness of text4baby by measuring health trends for mothers and newborns.

Wallabies poisoned to death on Collier farm Owner taking matters into own hands to find killer By Renee Stoll Story Created: Feb 1, 2010 at 10:41 PM EST Story Updated: Feb 1, 2010 at 10:41 PM EST GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, FL. – A dozen wallabies are poisoned to death on a Collier County farm, now the woman breeding these exotic pets is taking matters into her own hands to find the killer. Feeding time for the marsupials on Halekoa Farm started off very differently one day in December. “I came out and found seven of my hand raised wallabies dead on the ground, with their five babies laying out beside them,” their owner explains. She doesn’t want WINK to use her name because she believes her animals are being targeted and poisoned. The owner had necropsies done on three of the dead wallabies. Recreational drugs were found in the animals, causing their lungs and liver to explode. Their owner says the vet gave her news that broke her heart, “he told me they had a very horrible death.” It’s been almost two months and the wallaby owner feels Florida Fish and Wildlife, the lead investigators on this case, aren’t doing their job. “All they keep telling me is I’m never going to find out who did this.” Calls we made to the agency weren’t returned. Now, this owner feels the only way to solve the crime is to offer her own $500 reward for information leading to an arrest. “I just hope that whoever did this feels bad for what they did.” Halekoa Farm is installing cameras to watch over their remaining 11 wallabies in case the killer should return. The cost of the dozen animals that were killed is estimated at $24,000. Next article Two Bail Bondsmen Arrested for Stealing From Client
