IT’S YOUR MONEY: New recycling program in Naples

NAPLES, Fla. – It’s your money and Naples is spending more than $260 thousand on a new recycling program. City leaders say it won’t cost taxpayers extra, but some people aren’t looking forward to the change. Naples collects 26 hundred tons of recycling every year. Right now, it is sorted and sent to Lee County to be dropped off. But, the city doesn’t make any money off it. On Wednesday, City Council voted to change that. “Instead of us paying to throw away garbage, we’re being paid to recycle because these commodities have value,” said City Councilman, Sam Saad III. The city will now buy the single stream recycling bins, with wheels, and work up an official contract with Lee County to get paid. The bins won’t cost taxpayers extra and they won’t have to sort their recyclables. The city will make about $67 thousand a year, paying off the expense of the new bins within five years. “If you make the bin easy for people to use and its single stream so you don’t have to separate it, then people will recycle more and we’ll become more green,” said City Councilman Gary Price. City leaders say the bins will also bring in more green as they expand the program. But, not all homeowners are excited about it, saying the new bins are too big and bulky. “Big bins will be difficult for our elderly and handicapped residents to put out, even though they’re put on wheels,” said homeowner Erika Hinsons. City leaders tell us they are hoping neighbors will help each other if anyone struggles getting the new bins to the curb. Fla. schools to challenge class size penalties

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Some Florida school boards are planning a lawsuit to challenge penalties that could reach $351 million statewide if they fail to meet class size limits this fall. Wayne Blanton, executive director of the Florida School Boards Association, on Monday said he expected the case to be filed in Tallahassee by early September. The boards say the penalties would violate a constitutional requirement for a uniform school system because fine money would be given to other districts that are in compliance. Most, though, are expected to violate a constitutional amendment adopted in 2002. Blanton said the issue would disappear if voters in November pass another amendment to loosen the limits. KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) – The federal government will spend $89 million to preserve almost 26,000 acres of wild ranch land in a northern swath of the Florida Everglades in the biggest purchase of its kind. Federal officials announced the land deal Monday. Under the plan, the federal government will purchase the land from four ranching families in the Fisheating Creek watershed located in Florida’s rural Highlands County. The outlay represents a quarter of what the federal government will spend buying land this year as part of its Wetlands Reserve Program. It also is the largest contiguous easement purchase in the program’s history. ????? The entire Everglades once covered more than 6,250 square miles, but has shrunk by half, replaced with homes and farms and a 2,000-mile grid of drainage canals. Traffic stop leads to fake credit card bust Business owners happy to know fake credit cards didn’t hit the streets By Renee Stoll Story Created: Mar 25, 2010 at 10:36 PM EDT Story Updated: Mar 25, 2010 at 10:36 PM EDT COLLIER COUNTY, FL. – A routine traffic stop in Collier County turns into a fake credit card bust. Steven Leonard with Port Royal Jewelers knows criminals spending other people’s money usually have expensive taste. So, he was happy to hear a Miami man toting around 38 fake credit cards was caught on Interstate 75 in Collier County, before he made it to Naples. In fact, just this week a man was caught using a fake credit card at another jewelery store, stealing near $4,000 in jewels. According to reports, deputies found the 38 cards in Carlos Lima’s wallet and cigarette pack. All were swiped and found to be frauds. “Sadly it doesn’t surprise me,” Leonard says. Due to a rise in criminal activity like fake credit cards, his store is taking extra precautions. “We’ve kept up on new terminals and credit card procedures, just different steps we do to cover all of our bases.” Law enforcement says organized criminals steal imprint machines and make the cards themselves, then often load them with credit information they get from skimming devices. Police: Woman in bust hid nearly $26,000 in bra

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A fraud bust, indeed: Spokane County sheriff’s deputies said a woman was hiding nearly $26,000 in her bra when she was booked into jail for investigation of theft. Lukeisha A. Harris was one of three Seattle-area residents arrested Friday as part of an alleged fraud ring. Deputies said they used phony Oregon driver’s licenses and counterfeit credit cards to obtain cash advances from Spokane banks. Sheriff’s spokesman Dave Reagan said the three were arrested after a worker at one bank reported that they tried to obtain money using a stolen credit card. The investigators followed the ring to two other banks before making the bust. Reagan said that during a search at the Spokane County Jail, guards found that the 24-year-old Harris – who is 6 feet tall and 400 pounds – had the cash hidden in her bra, along with bank receipts. It was not immediately known Saturday if Harris or the other suspects had lawyers.
