Video: Man hugging, kissing chicken on NYC subway

NEW YORK — New York City’s transit agency is investigating a video posted online that shows a man kissing and snuggling a live chicken aboard a subway. Spokesman Charles Seaton said Thursday it was looking into whether the Tuesday incident on the uptown No. 6 train was a prank. He says no passengers reported it. The video shows the man hugging, kissing and caressing a chicken as he lies on the subway train’s floor. Some passengers look on and laugh, while others seem to be hustling out of his way and into to the next car. The video was posted on a riders blog, YouTube and was picked up by Gothamist, a local blog network. The blogger wrote that the man seemed oblivious to his surroundings. Seaton says only service animals and those in containers are permitted in the subway system. — On the Net: YouTube: http://tinyurl.com/yzcrnwg

Burning bagel empties Portland City Hall

PORTLAND, Ore. — An overdone bagel forced the evacuation of Portland’s City Hall. The Oregonian reported that City Hall emptied for about 20 minutes Wednesday morning while firefighters dealt with the burning bagel in the break room of Mayor Sam Adam’s office. There’s no immediate word on who burned the bagel in the toaster oven or what type of bagel it was. City commissioners were meeting at the time and joined those who took to the sidewalks. Adams apologized for the interruption after the evacuation. — Information from: The Oregonian, http://www.oregonlive.com

Priest accused of shoplifting butter, sofa cover

Priest accused of shoplifting butter, sofa cover

WEST CITY, Ill. — A Roman Catholic priest was accused of shoplifting butter and a sofa cover at a Wal-Mart in southern Illinois. Police arrested 41-year-old the Rev. Steven Poole on Friday. He’s charged with two felony theft counts. Investigators said Poole failed to scan a $3.22 container of butter and a $60 sofa cover at a self-checkout. Poole then allegedly went to the store’s bedding section, picked up a memory foam mattress and switched the pricing bar code. That caused the $145 item to be scanned for $31. Allegedly, Poole also possessed a stolen laptop computer power pack. He’s the priest for St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Christopher and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sesser. Poole does not have a listed home telephone number, and messages left for him at the churches were not returned. — Information from: Benton Evening News, http://www.bentoneveningnews.com

Court stops NYC suit vs. online cigarette vendor

Court stops NYC suit vs. online cigarette vendor

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has ruled against New York City in its effort to use federal racketeering law to sue Internet cigarette sellers for lost tax revenue. By a 5-3 vote Monday, the court ended the city’s lawsuit against Hemi Group, a New Mexico-based company that sells cigarettes online. New York taxes the possession of cigarettes but finds it difficult to collect those taxes from Internet sales. The city says it loses millions of dollars in tax revenues from online sales. Sellers like Hemi are not required to charge or collect the taxes, but they are supposed to provide information about their customers to states. New York’s lawsuit under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act accused Hemi of fraud for failing to provide the customer information. The court said Monday that the city cannot use the racketeering law to collect tobacco taxes from Hemi. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas formed the majority. Justice Sonia Sotomayor did not take part in the case because it came from the federal appeals court in New York on which she served before her elevation to the high court. The case is Hemi Group v. City of New York, 08-969.

Pope to priests: Go forth and blog

Pope to priests: Go forth and blog

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI has a new commandment for priests struggling to get their message across: Go forth and blog. The pope, whose own presence on the Web has heavily grown in recent years, urged priests on Saturday to use all multimedia tools at their disposal to preach the Gospel and engage in dialogue with people of other religions and cultures. And just using e-mail or surfing the Web is often not enough: Priests should use cutting-edge technologies to express themselves and lead their communities, Benedict said in a message released by the Vatican. “The spread of multimedia communications and its rich ‘menu of options’ might make us think it sufficient simply to be present on the Web,” but priests are “challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources,” he said. The message, prepared for the World Day of Communications, suggests such possibilities as images, videos, animated features, blogs, and Web sites. Benedict said young priests should become familiar with new media while still in seminary, though he stressed that the use of new technologies must reflect theological and spiritual principles. “Priests present in the world of digital communications should be less notable for their media savvy than for their priestly heart, their closeness to Christ,” he said. The 82-year-old pope has often been wary of new media, warning about what he has called the tendency of entertainment media, in particular, to trivialize sex and promote violence, while lamenting that the endless stream of news can make people insensitive to tragedies. But Benedict has also praised new ways of communicating as a “gift to humanity” when used to foster friendship and understanding. The Vatican has tried hard to keep up to speed with the rapidly changing field. Last year it opened a YouTube channel as well as a portal dedicated to the pope. The Pope2You site gives news on the pontiff’s trips and speeches and features a Facebook application that allows users to send postcards with photos of Benedict and excerpts from his messages to their friends. Many priests and top prelates already interact with the faithful online. One of Benedict’s advisers, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, the archbishop of Naples, has his own Facebook profile and so does Cardinal Roger Mahony, archbishop of Los Angeles. In Saturday’s message – titled “The priest and pastoral ministry in a digital world: new media at the service of the Word” – Benedict urged special care in contacts with other cultures and beliefs. A presence on the Web, “precisely because it brings us into contact with the followers of other religions, nonbelievers and people of every culture, requires sensitivity to those who do not believe, the disheartened and those who have a deep, unarticulated desire for enduring truth and the absolute,” he said. Monsignor Claudio Maria Celli, who heads the Vatican’s social communications office, said that Benedict’s words aimed to encourage reflection in the church on the positive uses of new media. “That doesn’t mean that (every priest) must open a blog or a Web site. It means that the church and the faithful must engage in this ministry in a digital world,” Celli told reporters. “At some point, a balance will be found.” Celli, 68, said that young priests would have no trouble following the pope’s message, but, he joked, “those who have a certain age will struggle a bit more.” — On the Net: http://pope2you.net http://www.vatican.va
