Angelina Jolie urges aid for flood-hit Pakistan

Angelina Jolie urges aid for flood-hit Pakistan

LONDON (AP) — Angelina Jolie says it’s vital that people help Pakistan’s flood victims and not surrender to compassion fatigue. The floods have displaced 20 million people, but donations are below those for catastrophes like the Haitian earthquake or the Asian tsunami. Jolie said she understood that “it is getting hard for people – they see Haiti, they see these other events … and they get exhausted by the time another big one rolls around.” But she said Pakistanis face “mass death, mass displacement, and this situation is going to get worse.” Jolie has visited Haiti, Iraq and other countries as a U.N. goodwill ambassador. The star says she might visit Pakistan once “the cameras go away.” Jolie spoke Monday at the London premiere of her spy thriller “Salt.” ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. Michaele Salahi to auction off infamous red sari

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michaele Salahi is going to auction off the red sari she wore when she and her husband allegedly crashed a White House state dinner last November. In an interview with the Associated Press, Salahi said she plans to put the dress up for bid around the time the scandal is addressed in “The Real Housewives of D.C.” There’s no airdate yet for the episode. Salahi said the auction proceeds will go to victims of the Haitian earthquake and people with multiple sclerosis. Salahi is one of five women starring in the series that premieres Thursday night on Bravo. Much of the first episode features the other four housewives criticizing Salahi behind her back for being too skinny and allegedly not paying her bills. Salahi said watching the episode hurt for “a minute,” but she got over it. ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. Penn urges help for hospitals in post-quake Haiti

Penn urges help for hospitals in post-quake Haiti

WASHINGTON (AP) — Actor Sean Penn said Wednesday the biggest challenge facing post-quake Haiti is getting hospitals staffed and supplied during its current rainy season and ahead of the upcoming hurricane season. Penn, who co-founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization shortly after the earthquake and has pitched in at camps for survivors, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the problem requires “immediate attention” and shouldn’t be held up by bureaucratic disagreements. “In many cases, the bureaucracy of international aid is protecting people to death,” Penn said, noting that several hospitals have closed because they have been over-scrutinized and under-supported. The actor testified at the hearing along with administration officials, who also highlighted some of the successes made since an earthquake devastated the country in January. The disaster left 230,000 people dead and displaced more than one million. T. Christopher Milligan, who coordinates the disaster response in Haiti for the U.S. Agency for International Development, said the agency has helped vaccinate about 900,000 adults and children against common diseases. In addition, he said, USAID has worked with the international community to assist 1.5 million people with shelter. And more people have access to clean water than before the earthquake, he said. “That said, let me be clear: The challenges before us are formidable,” Milligan said. “The road ahead will not be easy.” Poverty, security and poor health care are just a few of the problems Haitians face, Milligan said, and a lack of infrastructure is only made worse by the tons of rubble from the earthquake. Milligan said the agency has been focused on the approaching hurricane season, but assessing what effect the earthquake has had on shelters and other hurricane plans has been difficult. “We still are not there yet,” he said. “We are still preparing.” The hurricane season officially starts June 1. Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., have proposed increasing American aid to Haiti to $3.5 billion over the next five years. “In many ways, our work in Haiti is just beginning,” said Kerry, the committee’s chairman.

Sean Penn slams those who question his Haiti aid

Sean Penn slams those who question his Haiti aid

NEW YORK (AP) — Sean Penn has strong words for those who think he’s showing off with his aid to earthquake-ravaged Haiti. In an interview airing on this weekend’s “Sunday Morning” on CBS, the outspoken actor says he hopes any cynic who dismisses his efforts as a star turn will “die screaming of rectal cancer.” Penn has visited the devastated Caribbean nation accompanied by doctors and a U.S. businesswoman with whom he established a relief organization. He has brought water filters for distribution to villages and met with aid groups. Besides raising funds, Penn says he has contributed his own money. When asked how much, he replies with a laugh, “Enough that I’d better get a job soon.” — CBS is a division of CBS Corp. — On the Net: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/sunday/main3445.shtml

A U.S. military official says a C-130 cargo plane carrying the Americans landed at Miami International Airport. After arriving, seven of the eight went to a hotel adjoining the airport. They were allowed to leave by Haitian judge Wednesday, nearly three weeks after they were jailed for trying to take a group of children out of the earthquake-stricken country. Hours after a judge decided to free 8 of the 10, the group – looking bedraggled and sweat-soaked – walked out of the Haitian jail escorted by US diplomats just after dusk. They waited until they were safely inside a white van before flashing smiles and giving a thumbs up to reporters. Previous article Cape Coral Intersection “Dangerous”. Gay, a Haitian-American, says he located his business in Haiti a few years ago after retiring early in the U.S. He hopes his experience will help the Haitians. “I came back here mostly to help to try to see what I could do as far as helping this country develop as far as using the knowledge and the resources that I had acquired and invest them in Haiti,” he said. Gay has been meeting with international officials to help coordinate the massive rebuilding effort in Haiti. He says the priority right now is restoring power.
