NM Goodwill collection box turns up inert grenade

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Just in case it wasn’t clear: Weapons and drugs don’t make good charitable donations. Albuquerque police briefly evacuated a Goodwill store Thursday after someone left a pistol, ammunition, a grenade and some marijuana in a collection box. Police spokeswoman Nadine Hamby says the police bomb squad took the grenade away for demolition after determining it was a World War II-style inert – or inactive – grenade. The police report did not list what type of guns were in the box or the quantity of marijuana. ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. Wyo. troopers examine human ashes in traffic stop

FARSON, Wyo. (AP) — The powdery substance that Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers found in a zip-close bag during a recent traffic stop didn’t turn out to be drugs after all. Sgt. Stephen Townsend of the patrol said then when troopers pulled over two men in a car Wednesday, they found small amounts of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and thought the bag might hold illegal drugs. Troopers contacted the car’s owner – the girlfriend of one of the men – and asked her. The woman told troopers the baggie held her grandmother’s cremated ashes. She said they had been very close and she always keeps the ashes in her car. Townsend said troopers put the ashes back. ? 2010 The Associated Press . All rights reserved. Rapper T.I., wife arrested on drug charges

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Grammy-winning rapper T.I., who is still on probation after spending time behind bars on gun charges, was arrested along with his wife on drug charges after police smelled alleged marijuana coming from their car, authorities said. The Wednesday night arrests for possession of a controlled substance occurred in West Hollywood during a traffic stop, Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy Mark Pope told The Associated Press. “Deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle,” the department said. “A narcotics investigation ensued” that resulted in the arrests. The department’s media office said it didn’t yet have details on which specific drug the possession charge concerned. The arrests reflect that last week of socialite Paris Hilton, whose is being investigated for felony cocaine possession after a motorcycle officer smelled pot wafting from her car. The Atlanta-based T.I., 29, whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., and Cottle, a 36-year-old singer who sang with the 1990s group Xscape and has recently been the star of the BET reality series “The Tiny & Toya Show,” were booked at the West Hollywood sheriff’s station. Bail was set at $10,000 each. Pope said Thursday that he didn’t know if they were still being held. T.I.’s publicist declined to comment. T.I., the multiplatinum hitmaker who has a key role in the current top box office movie “Takers,” served seven months in an Arkansas federal prison and three months in a Georgia halfway house on federal weapons charges and was released in March. He is on three years’ probation. Since that case, T.I., who had spent time behind bars for drug offenses before, vowed to live a better life. He spoke to kids about the dangers of drugs and guns, and former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young was one of his supporters. As he prepared for his most recent sentence, he starred in the MTV reality show “T.I.’s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go.” The father of five married Cottle in late July. “Takers,” a shoot ‘em up about an armored truck robbery that goes bad, was released last week and topped the box-office chart. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, T.I. talked about living a more positive life. “Right now, it’s all about moving forward and just acknowledging the blessing that are here today. … Just moving past the regrets of yesterday – the things that could’ve been done better,” T.I. said in a July interview. T.I., who is known as the “King of the South,” has emerged one of music’s most profitable stars over the last few years. He is working on a new album, “King Uncaged,” which may be released this year. — Associated Press Music Writer Nekesa Mumbi Moody contributed to this report. ? 2010 The Associated Press . Goodwill employee steals from cash register

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Goodwill a place devoted to helping people get on their feet. But now one if its own employees is charged with stealing money from the organization. “It’s very disappointing clearly when something like this happens, because it’s not just any store they’re taking money from,” Goodwill Spokesperson Kirsten O’Donnell said. 28 year old Jessica Barfield worked at the Port Charlotte store since January. When the Loss Prevention Manager suspected Barfield was helping herself to cash, they checked old surveillance video. On 3 separate days, they say they caught her stealing more than $1,000. Friday, they say they caught her again. This time, she made off with about $300 dollars. “For somebody to be taking money away from our mission, away from our agency, it’s not just hurting their co-workers, not just hurting that particular store, it’s hurting more than 10,000 people who rely on our services every year,” O’Donnell said. According to the report, Barfield would ring up customers’ merchandise for 99 cents. Then, she’d tell the customer the correct amount – $20 for example. – and pocket the difference. O’Donnell says 85% of store revenue goes to programs helping people with disabilities and low incomes achieve independence. “This isn’t just somebody taking money from us, it’s somebody taking money from our mission,” O’Donnell said.
