COCOA, Fla. (AP) – Solar-powered golf carts will soon shuttle shoppers and tourists around a central Florida downtown village. It used to be horse and carriage rides, but by the end of the summer the eco-friendly “Solar Rider” will shuttle shoppers from parking areas to shops and other spots of interest in Cocoa Village while saving energy and promoting green concept. Volunteers will drive the carts while conducting the tours, stopping along 20 historic sites. The shuttle tour is expected to give the historic sites a boost since many people can’t do walking tours, plus it’s hot outside. The tours on the eco golf carts are free. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – High school football teams in southwest Florida will honor the late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner by placing his initials on their helmets this season. Most of his donations were anonymous, but a few became public. Steinbrenner helped complete Tampa Catholic’s football stadium. ???? ? He replaced stolen equipment for little league teams and aided in the purchase of commemorative rings for the University of Tampa’s first national baseball championship. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – An illegal immigrant has been convicted of murder for a second time in a 2005 north Florida stabbing. A Duval County jury found 39-year-old Benito Ramirez guilty of first-degree murder Thursday. Authorities say Ramirez had been out drinking with 29-year-old Stacy M. Replogle – a woman he had been dating – when the two got into an argument over the bill. Ramirez reportedly cut Replogle 14 times and dumped her body in a wooded area. The Mexico-native claimed self-defense. Ramirez was previously convicted of the killing in 2007, but the 1st District Court of Appeal overturned the verdict, saying police used improper interrogation techniques. Fla. detectives crack 9-year-old cold case

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) – Polk County Sheriff’s Office detectives say they’ve solved the case of a 36-year-old central Florida woman who disappeared nine years ago. Dion Kaseta, now living in Chattanooga, Tenn., has been arrested in connection with the death of Kimberly Mimmovich in 2001, his former live-in girlfriend. Investigators say Mimmovich was last seen with Kaseta at the Midway Lounge near Lake Alfred. Kaseta originally told detectives he and Mimmovich had driven to Deerfield Beach, where they got into an argument. He said Mimmovich left to walk on the beach alone. Kaseta said he reported her missing after she never returned. Authorities say additional witnesses and evidence have lead them to conclude that Mimmovich is dead and that she was killed by Kaseta. Both conservative and liberal pundits give Barack Obama lower marks than the B-plus the president gave himself

If Democratic strategist Donna Brazile were a teacher grading Barack obama’s first year in office, she’d give him B — half a grade lower than what the president recently awarded himself.
Brazile said she’d like to see Obama “use a little bit more of his political capital to really force Congress to do something about jobs [...]
