COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Backlash about plans to bring Jackson Labs to Collier County at Tuesday’s commission meeting. The concern is the company won’t really bring as many jobs as it hopes. Two of the most vocal, other laboratories in Naples that say they did it without public funds. “Yeah, I don’t expect a hand out.” And Kevin Thomas says he never got one to start up two sites for Alternative Laboratories, a business he’s had in Naples for the last 32 years specializing in nutrition and alternative healing. So, he wonders why should Jackson Labs? “Do I want someone to give me a handout and pay for my growth and development? No, I don’t want the tax payers to pay. I don’t want my taxes to go up,” Thomas explains. While many don’t want to see their taxes increase, the push for a medical park to sustain the county’s economy is there. But, some question if the county chose the right company. The dozens of employees who showed up from Arthrex, a medical device manufacturing company in Naples, let their signs speak for themselves. They made it clear they feel Jackson Labs is getting a free ride. And, the long-run payoff of thousands of jobs in a medical park may not be what the county winds up getting. “I would just like to see a better selection of a suited company to come to Collier County that has a proven track record of success before they come to town, not a pie in the sky venture that may not ever succeed in ten years,” Tim Hoover with Arthrex says. Other people at the meeting say Jackson Labs has proven itself with over 20 Nobel Peace Prizes for it’s research. Lee Co. Ready to Jump into Effort to Get Swim Center By WINK News Story Created: Mar 10, 2010 at 10:47 AM EST Story Updated: Mar 10, 2010 at 10:47 AM EST Lee County is ready to jump right into the water, in the effort to bring a National Swim Center to SW Florida. “This is huge, a huge 80-million dollar impact to the county’s economy,” said Commissioner Ray Judah. The county could cobble together several million dollars, but the National Swim Center Corp. of Austin TX would have to pay tens of millions, Judah said. That could be a real problem, and other commissioners worry about tax-payers being saddled with the bills for the swim center, that could be located at City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers. “We can only put so many financial anchors around the necks of the taxpayers and the county,” said Commissioner Frank Mann. Cape Coral is considering the swim center also, but council members have indicated, they may not have the money or desire to proceed. The swim center wants to also have a convention center and a hotel for out of town visitors.
