Woman who kept dead body in house for more than a year may lose home

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A Fort Myers woman admits to living with her mother’s dead body for more than a year. Deputies found the remains in June and condemned the home. Now, the daughter is fighting to keep from losing the house for good. Gail Andrews hasn’t lived here since June when deputies found her mothers decomposing body. Andrews said she knew her home wasn’t safe to live in after the roof was damaged by two hurricanes. That’s why she didn’t want to let authorities inside… even after her mother died more than a year ago. “No one wants to be on the street. No one wants that kind of life, so I did the unthinkable, according to most people. I know it’s shocking and horrifying, but I did the only thing I could do.” Now, her home is set to be demolished September 17th, unless the structural damage is fixed before then. “This is everything I have lived through for… I’m 61 years old. To part with things that may be unimportant to other people are important to me, emotionally. I’m exploring all kinds of possibilities to see if I can save my home.” Volunteers have already been out helping Andrews clean up. “To see all of that go needlessly would be… it isn’t just the structure. It’s the history of my entire life. I’d like to see the house saved, if anything for the memory of my parents. What I will do from now, I don’t know. I have no idea.” Andrews said that home has been in her family for three generations. She said it was hard to keep up with the maintenance while caring for both of her sick parents. Mother/daughter nurses help victims in Haiti By Christina Hernandez, WINK News Story Created: Jan 29, 2010 at 3:24 PM EST Story Updated: Jan 29, 2010 at 6:47 PM EST FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two Fort Myers nurses said they faced the unthinkable in Haiti after flying to their homeland to help the wounded. Betty Mesidore and Christina Theogene didn’t think twice about visiting their home country after some of it was destroyed by an earthquake. “When I saw the pictures on CNN and was unable to reach my family, I knew,” Mesidore said. The mother and daughter took pictures while they were there. “I didn’t know that could happen in Haiti because I grew up in Haiti and to know what it was and see what it is now – that was a big shocker for me,” Theogene said. Once they found out their family was okay, they went to work – helping the people who were hurt. “We went there and did the best we could. We had very little to work with,” Mesidore said. “I never thought in my lifetime, as a nurse, that I would be faced with that.” Mesidore said she helped perform a c-section on a woman without any anesthesia. “We had about eight people pressing her down to do a c-section on her because she was having seizures and thankfully she was safe, and the baby,” she said. Theogene said the wounds in Haiti are physical and emotional. They learned that first-hand. “The Tuesday that 6.2 earthquake hit, we were there and I believe God made us feel that so we could understand.” That mother and daughter, who have lived here for six years, hope to return to Haiti in the next few weeks to follow up with their patients.
