SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 29 — Microsoft on Thursday announced the net profit of its second quarter hit $6.66 billion, a record high. It said that the unprecedented revenue was driven by the immense demand of its new operating system, Windows 7.

The company told to the media its revenue surged 14% i.e. $19.02 billion in the 3Q fiscal ended December 31.

Peter Klein, the chief financial officer of Microsoft, said in a press conference, “We saw record revenue and record profit, driven by strong demand for Windows 7 and PCs (personal computers).”

It is a 57% jump from last years same quarter. Now the net income per share has gone to 74 cents.

According to company officials, Microsoft has licensed or sold over 60 million Windows 7 copies that was launched on October 22 last year with the Windows Server 2008 R2 software.

On the opening days of Windows 7, the US sales blasted past those of Vista predecessor noted the NPD Group.

There was immense pressure on Microsoft for making the Windows 7 a success as its Vista operating system did not do well.

Across the globe, users as well as technology analysts have overall praised this new operating system of Microsoft and mentioned it as a significant improvement over Vista.
